I am constantly amazed at the pathways and locations sailed by some of our Youth Sailors as they take opportunities in our Sport.
Only a few years ago, a young James Hodgson was a Optimist sailor sailing the Maroochy in his dinghy which is still still at the Club with a new owner.
James outgrew his Optimist, as young sailors do, but instead of Fleet Racing, he became involved in the very competitive discipline of Match Racing (boat on boat, like the America’s Cup).
His voyage has taken him from sailing Elliott’s at Mooloolaba, to competing in Brisbane at State Youth level. Success led to him invited to participate in National Youth Match Racing Regattas, including Hobart and Perth, testing himself successfully against the best Youth Match Racing skippers in the nation.
One of his usual competitors, Tom Grimes from Sydney, invited James to join his crew for the 2019 Youth Match Racing World Championships currents sailed in Ekaterinburg, Russia in August 2019.
When you launch your boat in this sport, you don’t know where you will sail to, given the numerous opportunities available to you!
