Sailing Report - Sunday 16 September.

An interesting day on the water for all Sailors!

In the morning, there was a large group on Adventure sailors undertaking their Training with our Training Co-ordinator, Graeme. Conditions were pretty benign with a moderate NNW breeze that only started to swing around midday, giving them a great opportunity to develop their sailing skills.

Race Officer Mike Groves set an interesting course for the afternoon Long Course racing, with a long windward beat and four crossriver reaches on the downwind legs towards the motorway bridge. The breeze had swung from the NNW in the morning, to ESE and freshened as a Southerly change moved across the Sunshine Coast. Five Lasers, nine Pacers and Sabres and three Junior boats ( 2 Optis and a Bug) faced the starter.

The wind strengthened considerably as the fleet completed their First Race with gusts reaching over 20 knots. Given the conditions, the young skippers in the Junior fleet headed for shore, and a number of Senior boats had capsizes or gear issues forcing them ashore.

Brent Simons sailed well to lead the Lasers home in both races, as did John Ladewig and Ilan Scofield in their Sabres. Joy Jessett showed great persistence in her Optimist to finish the first race. Also worthy of mention was the young crew of Sean Saunders and Lou Agnew sailing one of the Pacers very competently in testing conditions.

Many of our younger sailors now head north to Yeppoon for the Queensland Youth Camp and Youth Sailing titles over the School Vacation - Good Luck to you all!

Next week (Sunday 23 September) those remaining at Maroochy will have a River Runners Event - a Fun Race(s) with Race Officer, John Ladewig. In the morning will be Adventure Sailing and Tackers 3 Training.
