Very busy morning with lots of groups doing their things on the beach at Maroochy Sailing Club.
A visit from the Australian Sailing Windsurfing School in Brisbane gave many youngsters the chance to give this aspect of the sport a go. The shallow area off the beach provided an ideal area for them to test their skills. A few “old hands” or former windsurfers took the opportunity to try the new light boards used today.
Casey had her group of Tackers 3 students in he Tackers Optimists practising their skills out on the water.
Quite a few Adventure Sailors relaxing out on the water in the Club Pacers, and about half a dozen Discover Sailors had a Come ‘n’ Try sail with an experienced sailor in any spare Pacer, and all seemed to enjoy their time on the water.
All rounded off with a Sausage Sizzle cooked by David on the BBQ.
After lunch, about 8 boats rigged for the afternoon race - a Fun Race in the River Runners Series. With a strong making tide and a gusty NNE breeze that swung quite markedly at times, RO Peter Brodie set a simple triangular course, but used a Gate Starting procedure to get the Fleet underway. Once competitors adapted to the differing requirements of Gate Starts, there was good competition on the water, with Dave Krempin always near the front of the fleet. Six short races were held during the afternoon, and sailors had some good rides in the gusty conditions.

Bob Johnson manned the Safety RIB to ensure everyone was safe. His major “rescue” of the afternoon was the Club’s Start Boat, when the usually reliable motor refused to start after the racing due to an apparent electrical fault , and had to be towed home by the smaller RIB. Looks like a new emergency “Kill Switch” needs to be fitted this week!
